Figma Izuku Midoriya (AKA Deku): Plus Ultra!

At it once again, and with what could be considered a collectible in both price and availability, this time I'm taking a look at Figma Izuku Midoriya by Goodsmile Company.

Aesthetics:

For the most part this guy looks like he was ripped straight out of the Anime. The proportions are perfectly cartoonish without looking unnatural. The figure is based on Midoriya's alpha costume, with it mainly being a green tracksuit with black elbow and knee pads as well as red sneakers and belt, with some more black on the buckle for some detail. He also has white gloves and stripes running all along the sides of the suit. The hair does a very good job at recreating the look from the anime, with a majority being green but with the underside and spot on the back being in black. One downside to the looks is how obvious the joints are, with weird cuts on the sides of his upper torso and the shiny black joints are also easily visible in a neutral position.

Articulation:

The articulation for this figure is good but nothing special. He can pull off a lot of poses but nothing that most current action figures can't do. Here's everything he can do:
  • Full range of movement with a peg and ball joint connection
  • Double ball joints in the shoulders
  • 90' bend at the elbow
  • Multi-directional hinge and swivel at the wrists
  • Mid torso ball joint
  • Ball joint at the waist
  • 45' outward hip movement
  • Legs move out about 45' and 15' backwards
  • Single joint at the knee for slightly over 90' at the knees
  • Tilt and swivel at the ankle
  • Toes move forward

Accessories:

Deku doesn't really have any features other than his articulation and accessories. Included are 7 alternate hands (fists, open hands, fists with holes and a one-for-all finger-breaking right hand), three faces (smiling, open-mouth angry and a shocked/scared face) as well as a clear figma stand with an adapter for more neutral poses. He also includes a sheet of clear gel sticky dots to represent sweat (which I have forgotten to include in the photos). For the price I'd expect more but not too bad.

Comparisons:

Izuku seems to be in the 1/12 scale, and stands at 14cm (or about 5.5 inches for those that use imperial), which is short for compared to a lot of figures in this scale but is fitting for a high school student.

Here's the figure with some other current collectible figures, Pop! Batman and Marvel Legends Gamerverse Captain America:

And here's a comparison with some other Japanese import figures such as So-Do Kamen Rider Zero-Two, Gundam High Grade RX-78-2 and FRS Kamen Rider Ex-Aid.

Final Verdict:

All things considered, and including my bias as a fan of MHA, the figure is a good take on Deku and looks like he got ripped out of the anime, but isn't the best figure in the world and accounting for the price and additional import fees, isn't worth it unless you're a fan of the series.

Score: 7/10
